Cushion Commissions

I was recently asked by a friend to create a couple of cushion covers for her to give as a gift to her boyfriend. Her request was that one had a pineapple on it, and other to have hot air balloons. I have spent today making & finishing the hot air balloon cushion which has been really fun to do and I'm so happy with the results!

I chose a heavy pin striped cotton as the base which I thought would give the impression of a sky, and I decided to make the back pleated, which is so easy to do and looks impressive when finished. I then made a template for the balloons and cut them out in red polka dot cotton, this was then appliqued on.

To make it look more like a balloon I added in lines using my new embroidery foot, which makes them pop out just that little extra.

Next was a little more applique, and some more free stitching to finish the balloons. I then attached the zipper, and stitched the sides up and done!

Can't wait to start the pineapple cushion!

  1. Wow- your hot air balloons are amazing! That looks so awesome- and hard. You must have a lot of patience to stitch in all that detail.

  2. It wasn't too bad actually, but I was really enjoying doing it so I think that took the edge off!
